Salted Nutella Latte

May 8, 2014

Guys, it's Australia's Biggest Morning Tea week!

Even though this morning tea themed parcel swap is closed, you can still be a part of this hurrah on Erika's blog. She's hosting a "virtual" tea party which means all week long, she'll be posting up recipes that YOU guys submit through. It's not to late to whip up a quick cake or a batch of cookies and send it through to Erika! Also, it's definitely not too late to make a donation towards this good cause.

So, here is my latest craze and contribution for our virtual morning tea. Three very important words: Salted Nutella Latte

The trouble with having an active 19 month old means that I never get to really bake or make something extravagant, nor do I have the time to sit down for morning tea. Most of the things I make need to be quick, easy, sometimes on-the-go and delicious (err duh!). This quick recipe, I'm addicted to. I haven't stopped making it. I just CANNOT. It's sweet, salty, contains Nutella (a staple in my kitchen) and coffee - is that not the perfect combination ever?!

Lately, in the mornings while Scarlet is occupied with breakfast, I quickly whip a jug of this and enjoy a good 5 minutes of solitude next to my kitchen sink. It's also been a perfect cure for the chilly mornings we've had recently!

Ingredients //

Recipe adapted from The Faux Martha
(yield 1 serving / mug)

3/4 cup of milk
1 heap tbsp of Nutella
a pinch of kosher salt
1 tsp of water
1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
freshly brewed espresso

Method //

Brew your fresh espresso - can be from coffee machine, drip, plunger or even just instant coffee - whatever floats your boat.

In a small bowl, mix water and vanilla extract together to make a syrup. In a microwave safe mug, heat milk, Nutella, the vanilla syrup and kosher salt for 45 seconds. Take out, give it a good stir and place back in the microwave for a further 45 seconds.

Remove from microwave and froth up by stirring the top to your liking. Add to that freshly brewed espresso and stir until it is well combined and all the Nutella is all melted. Sprinkle with cocoa dust and enjoy your 5 minutes of bliss!

Hint - if you're one of those people who never finishes their coffee (holler to all the mamas out there!) refrigerate this baby for a good few hours and you'll have yourself an ICED salted nutella latte - win win win!

Double hint - it can be a bit tricky getting that froth at the top so if you have one of those frothers that come with a Nespresso or any other coffee machines, froth some milk in that and add to top.
