A21 Letter Movement

May 29, 2014

Did you know that there are more slaves in the world today than in any point in human history? An estimated 27 million men, women and children are being exploited for manual and sexual labour against their will.

Did you know that the average age of sex trafficking is 12 years old. This average age continues to grow younger as clients seek "fresh"product.

Did you know that only 1-2% of these victims are rescued? And only 1 in 100,000 traffickers are ever convicted?

Today I want to share with you a recent personal conviction that has torn my heart into a million pieces. I first came across the A21 Campaign through Twitter, where I stumbled upon the gut-wrenching facts of human trafficking; all of which are easier to ignore than it is to acknowledge. A huge part of me wanted to do just that; read the facts, let myself feel awful for a moment but then shut my brain off and choose not become in anyway involved in it, because to be involved would mean giving all of me and I wasn't mentally and emotionally prepared for that.

I'm not going to lie - I tried turning a blind eye for a couple of days but a huge part of me didn't allow that to happen. I had sleepless nights over the thought of these poor women and children being kidnapped, sold, beaten and used as sex slaves. They were someone's daughter, wife, friend, mother or relative and their essential human need for freedom was immorally taken away. Then I started to think about my own little girl and that was when I realised that even though I can't perpetually fix the problem, I can somehow make a contribution and in fact, everyone of us can.

I started finding myself on the A21 Campaign website in every spare minute, my heart breaking some more because I felt so powerless in such a global and fast growing predicament. How can someone we help mend the broken hearts of those that have been a victim of human trafficking? That's when I came across this little ray of hope...

This is what the A21 letter movement will be all about: instilling hope and encouragement to the thousands of victims that have sadly experienced this form of human injustice. I've teamed up with Rin Dawson (the Queen of letters herself!) from Papered Thoughts and we want to dedicate all of June to write letters - letters that speak life, love, hope and confidence back into these precious people. From my short time in the blogging and social media sphere, I've realised just how generous and kind the creative circle is, so I want to really encourage you guys to take heart and be a part of this movement. Think of it as the next round of Post-a-Parcel but this time, your letters and gifts will truly make a difference to the receiver.

So this is it guys! One whole month and as many letters as we can all write (there's no limit to how many you write so keep them coming!). I hope you will all join Rin and I on this journey. If this is something you'd like to be a part of, please email me here  (lifeandcoblog@gmail.com) for an info pack and guidelines in writing these letters. There is no cut off date to register your interest as long as it is between now and the end of June. Similar to the last few rounds of parcel swaps, I encourage you to still style and take photos of your letters to upload on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter (use the hashtag #a21lettermovement) so that we can spread the word and get others involved.

When the month of June finishes, Rin and I will collate all these letters for the guys at A21 to send off in one batch to different shelters around the world so they can be distributed those women and children that have been rescued and now taking refuge in these shelters.

"I don't know that my children or I will see the day when slavery and human trafficking are eradicated. Nonetheless, we're going to fight everyday against the inhumanity and brutishness, the greed and predation of the slave owners and their customers. Perhaps if we stand as one, hope and justice will prevail."

  8. Hi Nia,

The women at our church held an afternoon tea fundraiser for the A21 Campaign a couple of weeks ago. I really is heart-wrenching to know that this still happens in our world today. This is a great initiative & I hope many hearts will be blessed by it. x

    1. Hi Jess,

That's wonderful that you guys hosted a fundraiser! It's shocking isn't it to think that there are still millions out there experiencing slavery? I hope you can join me in this letter writing initiative and if it's something you think the girls at your church can get into, let me know and I'll be happy to send some info sheets your way. I'm sure the victims receiving these letters will be so blessed by them xx
