Advent Calendars

November 19, 2013

I've always liked the look and idea of advent calendars but never really bothered about them until a friend of mine shared her calendar tradition. Every year Sally and her husband will make their family advent calendar together at the end of November, mainly with whatever leftovers they have in Sally's arts and craft boxes.

As soon as 1st of December hits, the family would gather after meals to open the envelope/box that belongs to that particular day. On each day, Sally would have the children's dessert written on the card, along with the name of a book or story from the Bible that the family would read together whilst scoffing dessert. Isn't that just the sweetest?

It got me thinking of the importance and value of having family traditions (so far we only have our afternoon bike rides and Sunday naps!) and how this is one that I'd like to incorporate into our family. I love the idea of getting the family together every night for a whole month and sitting down to enjoy some good food, unwind together and share the true meaning and joy of Christmas with one another.

What do you all think about advent calendars? Is it something that you and your family do? If so, what do you put in your calendars? Here are a few of my favourite DIY calendars I'll be stealing ideas from!

  4. Our little family's been doing this ever since we had our firstborn! Now we have a 5 year old, 3 year old and a 10 month old and they all love opening their little daily surprises. I usually put in little treats in there for them to unravel and yep, always after dinner ;)
